ANC-Glendale Chapter Hosts Blood Drive
April 2007

Glendale, CA.  Nearly 100 community members eagerly volunteered to donate blood at St. Mary’s Apostolic Church on April 22nd, 2007, in honor of the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide.  The blood drive, organized by the Armenian National Committee – Glendale Chapter, in collaboration with the City of Glendale, Week of Remembrance Committee and the American Red Cross was held in commemoration of the Armenian Genocide.  All proceeds of the blood drive will go to local hospitals.

“It was refreshing to witness the impressive turnout at the blood drive, especially since the cause is so important,” commented Elen Asatryan of ANC Glendale Chapter. “An event like this not only brings attention to the atrocious tragedies and lost lives of the 1915 Armenian Genocide that occurred so many years ago that we strive to remember, but it also serves a great purpose by donating valuable blood to those in need in the community.”

While several people were unfortunately turned away due to various reasons, the medical center was still able to collect 68 pints of blood from healthy donors.  Several volunteers were on hand to provide food and refreshments for all donors to help offset the occasional dizziness experienced by blood donors.  Blood donors often reproduce the donated amount of blood within a day and all donors were encouraged to rest and eat healthy in order to promote blood production.

Some key members of the community that supported the charitable event were Glendale Mayor Ara Najarian, GUSD Board Member Joylene Wagner, and ANC-WR Chairman Rafi Hamparian.

The Armenian Genocide was a frightful point in the history of mankind.  Known as the first major genocide of the 20th century, the Armenian Genocide resulted in the mass murder of 1.5 million Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Turks.  While the Armenian Genocide is widely recognized throughout the world and among international bodies, Turkey continues to deny its role in the Armenian Genocide and instead promotes false propaganda.

April 24th, 2007 marked the 92nd commemoration of Armenian Genocide.
