ANC Glendale Annual Blood Drive Set for April 18
April 7, 2010

Glendale, CA– The Armenian National Committee - Glendale Chapter in collaboration with the City of Glendale’s Week of Remembrance Committee, Armenian Relief Society – Sepan Chapter and the American Red Cross will host its fifth annual blood drive in commemoration of the Armenian Genocide.  The event will take place on Sunday, April 18, 2009 from 10:00AM - 4:00PM at Krikor and Mariam Karamanoukian, Glendale Youth Center (211 W. Chestnut St., Glendale, CA.)

“The response from the community this year has been phenomenal. We’ve received more scheduled appointments than the total number of donors from the past two years combined,” stated Elen Asatryan, Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of Glendale.  “We look forward to bringing the community together once again to commemorate the Armenian Genocide of 1915 while helping offset the shortage of the much needed blood in our local hospitals,” added Asatryan.

The blood drive will benefit patients treated at Glendale Memorial and Glendale Adventist. Appointments are encouraged, walk-ins are welcome. To be eligible to donate blood you must be at least 16 years of age with parental consent, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good general health; valid identification is required.

“It is a constant struggle to provide a stable blood supply for patients all across Southern California” said Dr. Ross Herron, Chief Medical Officer for the American Red Cross Blood Services – Western Division.  “We want to help ensure that enough blood is on hand for routine as well as emergency needs. The risk is not having enough blood available and when blood supplies become short, physicians and hospitals may have to alter patients' treatment plans and postpone surgeries” added Dr. Herron.

ANC Glendale encourages residents to log on to www.givelife.org and enter sponsor code, ANCGlendale to make an appointment.   For more information call 818.243.3444 or email elen@ancglendale.org.

Known as the first genocide of the 20th century, the Armenian Genocide resulted in the mass murder of 1.5 million Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Turks.  April 24th, 2010 will mark the 95th commemoration of Armenian Genocide

The Armenian National Committee-Glendale Chapter advocates for the social, economic, cultural, and political rights of the city's Armenian American community and promotes increased civic participation at the grassroots and public policy levels.
